Missing Wildlife

Where has the wildlife disappeared? wondered Papu, as she waited by the water hole, there was not one animal insight, and it was the peak tourist season, most of the funding for conservation came from tourism and with no fauna insight, the DNR would suffer a paucity, some quick thinking led to a simple solution. Local school children volunteered as wildlife, wearing animal-like overalls on two limbs, waving to passing tourists in automobiles and safari vehicles. The tourists did not even realize the difference, was there any? Maybe all the wilder side to ourselves was gone in the race to development and so-called civilization, maybe all we had of the natural heritage was our children and the costumes?
